3 Ideas for Outdoor Summer Fun Around Savannah
Summer is STILL in full swing here in Savannah, meaning the occasional triple digit temperatures and whole lot of humidity (along with a rain shower or two…or ten).
It can be tempting to stay in the comfort of an air-conditioned building during these months and wait for it to all blow over - but we feel that’s a bit of a waste in this beautiful city of ours…
With that in mind, here’s 3 ideas for outdoor summer fun in the area that are going to be enjoyable even on the hottest days of the year.
1.) Tybee Island
The sun is shining, and there’s not a cloud in the sky – what better time is there than now to hit the beach!
Head over to Tybee Island and you’ll be able to cool off in the salt water before retiring back to the sandy beach and relaxing under the shade of an umbrella. Bring a good book and let the cool breeze remind you of what cooler more refreshing weather feels like (and give yourself a little break from the humidity).
Tybee Island is about 20 minutes away from Savanah itself and it’s one of the most popular ways to spend a warm summers day for tourists and locals alike. As such, it can get a little bit busy at times around the 16th street pier, especially on weekends.
If you want a little bit more peace and quiet, try heading south a block or two and you’ll find much more space.
2.) Leopold’s Ice Cream
Leopold’s Ice Cream has a cult-like following here in Savannah. They’ve been providing residents and tourists with some of the best tasting ice cream in the entire state since 1919. There’s a good reason why they are rated as the #3 restaurant in the entire city on trip advisor – no summer in Savannah is complete without visiting their parlor at least once.
Bonus Tip: We highly recommend you try the honey almond & cream flavor (that’s made with local Savannah Bee Company honey). Be sure to ask about the seasonal flavor of the month too!
3.) Take A Sunset Riverboat Cruise
When the sun starts to set, and temperatures become a little bit more manageable – a sunset riverboat cruise is one of the most relaxing ways to end a warm summer’s day.
Feel the breeze rush through your hair as you sit on an open-air deck sipping back an ice-cold drink of your choice. Watch one of our magnificent Savannah sunsets as the sky erupts into a crescendo of reds, oranges, yellows, and purples while you cruise along the water leaving any thoughts of the “real world” temporarily behind you.
Sunset cruises from Savannah Riverboat Cruises usually start boarding at 6 pm and leave for the water at 7 pm. You’ll usually get 2 hours on the boat and will be back on dry land by 9 pm. This is such a popular and magical experience that tickets sell out quickly, so it’s a good idea to book ahead in advance.
Note: Sunday brunch cruises are also available, which are something that you’ve got to try at least once (although technically it’s not “outdoors”). The menu is impeccable and the food is cooked to the highest standards. It’s a lunchtime cruise, but the climate controlled dining room on board ensures you’re going to be dining in cool, dehumidified comfort whatever the weather.
Whatever The Weather…
As we hope you’ll agree, even when the temperatures are soaring and the humidity is almost a little too much to be comfortable – there’s still plenty of ways you can enjoy our local area.
Because whatever the weather, life in Savannah is best lived outdoors.
