4 Ways To Celebrate St Patricks Day 2019 In & Around Savannah
It’s safe to say that Savannah loves St Patrick’s day. Each March the city comes alive and turns that beautiful shade of shamrock green to celebrate the holiday. There’s a huge selection of events, parties, and festivals taking place across the St Patrick’s day weekend, but here are a few that we think should be at the very top of your shortlist.
St Patricks Day Parade
Various Locations
Saturday, March 16, 2019 - 10:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
St Patricks Day wouldn’t really feel like St Patrick’s day unless there was an amazing parade to enjoy. This is probably one of the reasons why Savannah has the second largest St Patrick’s day parade in the United States (second only to New York). The parade is a Savannah tradition that is almost as old as the city itself with the first one taking place way back in 1824!
This year the parade promises to be bigger and better than ever, with hundreds of participants taking part in full costume and it’s a fun packed family-friendly way to enjoy the day. Over 300,000 people attended the parade last year, so expect an electric atmosphere and a day to remember!
For up to date schedules and routes check out the official parade website at http://savannahsaintpatricksday.com
Note: Don’t let the possibility of rain put you off the idea of coming out and enjoying the parade, the entire production is still going to go ahead even if the weather gets a little wetter.
St Patrick's Day Festival
River Street Savannah
Friday & Saturday, March 15 & 16 – 10am to Midnight
Head down to river street throughout the St Patrick’s day weekend and you’re guaranteed to find a party. Over the weekend there’s a wide range of entertainment on offer here including live music from local and national artists who will be playing for your enjoyment across multiple stages. You’ll be able to sample some excellent high-quality food and drink throughout the festival (much of which is colored green) and it’s an event that’s almost as popular as the parade itself. The festival starts off “quieter” in the morning (it’s still quite busy) and by the evening there will be so many party goers that you’ll struggle to find a place to stand.
Greening Of The Fountain
Forsyth Park
Friday, March 8th, 2019 - 12 pm.
If you’re new to the area you may not know about Savannah’s long-standing St Patrick’s day tradition of coloring the waters of almost all of the fountains in the city a bright and beautiful green. While it may not be on the same kind of scale as the world-famous greening of the Chicago River, it’s undeniably a very impressive, unusual, and fun sight to behold. Traditionally the first fountain to be “greened” in Savannah is the fountain in Forsyth Park (which is led by the St Patricks day parade grand marshal).
March Of Dimes Shamrock Run
Ellis Square, Savannah
Friday, March 8, 2019 - 6 pm
The March Of Dimes Shamrock Run is another one of the many St Patrick’s Day traditions in Savannah, and this year for the 25th time runners will take to the streets to raise money for a good cause. The course will take around 2,000 participants on a 5km route around the city. Many of the runners will be in elaborate costumes that most of us would struggle to walk in, let alone run 5km in.
Registration costs between $25 and $35 and runners of all capabilities are encouraged to participate (all proceeds go to the March Of Dimes foundation). If you’re not the running type, then standing along the route and cheering on the runners while marveling at the weird and wonderful costumes they have decided to participate in is equally as enjoyable!
