4 of the Best Family Friendly Rainy Day Activities In and Around Savannah
Despite us being blessed with glorious weather here in Savannah for most of the year, it does get a little rainy during these winter months. While life is certainly best lived outdoors in our little corner of the world, luckily, we’ve got a wide range of indoor activities that are perfect for the whole family on these rainy days. Here are a few of the best attractions and activities we recommend you check out when the weather is a little wetter in 2019.
1.) Escape Rooms
Escape rooms have seemingly come out of nowhere to captivate and entertain people from all over the world in an instant. Savannah is home to numerous escape rooms, all of which are highly regarded. You and your family will have to test your logical thinking and problem-solving abilities to escape the room before the timer runs out. All of the rooms are themed and you can choose from situations like pirate ships and zombie apocalypse scenarios, or you can go for one of the classics like being locked in a spooky museum or a haunted house. Check out any of the three best escape rooms in the area to be sure of a good time (Escape Savannah, Encryption Escape, and The Escape Company) they’re all very highly rated and are all more than worthy of your consideration.
2.) American Prohibition Museum
Travel back a hundred years or so to the 1900s to experience what life was like during prohibition era Savannah. Marvel at the “anti-booze” rallies that took place during the prohibition as countless highly skilled actors dress up in realistic period costumes take to the streets and explain the ways and thoughts of the time. Take your photo with famous gangsters from the era, and marvel at the lifelike wax figures that adorn the museum throughout. It’s a great day out for you and the kids as there’s a wide range of interactive and educational activities that are suitable for all ages too.
Tip: If the kids aren’t joining you, then upgrading your ticket to include a drink at the optional speakeasy at the end of the tour (for a classic old-timey cocktail) is a great way to end the day.
3.) University Of Georgia Aquarium
What better time to experience the wet and wonderful aquatic world of our rivers and oceans than when it’s just as wet above sea level as it is below it. The University Of Georgia’s aquarium is open to the general public and is an educational way for you and the kids to enjoy a rainy day. You’ll be able to marvel at the wide range of aquatic life on display here including the semi-famous Loggerhead Sea Turtle (who is undoubtedly the star of the show). There’s a touch tank that allows kids to get hands-on with sea life, and plenty of activities (like scavenger hunts) for the younger visitors too.
4.) Riverboat Tours
There’s a wide range of excellent riverboat tours that take place throughout the year – regardless of how wet the weather is (within reason). Standard riverboat cruises are super fun for the whole family as you go on an aquatic adventure while taking in the sights from the dry comfortable indoor areas on the boat (with large panoramic windows to ensure you don’t miss a thing). Special events that are geared more towards kids take place reasonably frequently and are a good way to give the young ones a super special and memorable treat. You’ll join the “pirate ship” as the kids join the crew searching for treasure (while avoiding “Stinky Pete” the bad guy). The kids always win in the end, and there’s real “treasure” for all involved too – so everyone goes home happy.
