6 Tips For Hiring the Right Contractor

Rather than trying to take on a big job by yourself, sometimes it just makes more sense to hire a local contractor and let the professionals handle the job. Deciding on a contractor can be a very stressful process– choosing the wrong person can lead to poor work, timeline delays and even legal problems. These 6 tips will better help you choose the “right” person for your next major project.

1. Know Where to Look

Ask a local real estate expert (such as myself, Trisha Cook) for personal referrals in order to gather several recommendations of reputable contractors in the area. 2. Ask Questions…lots of questions!

Are you knowledgeable in local building codes and restrictions? Are you fully licensed and insured? How long have you been in the business? What’s the best way to get in touch with you? What steps will you take to protect my property? Is there a warranty on any of the products and services you offer? Steer clear of any contractor who avoids questions or tries to work around the law.

3. Investigate like a Pro

Once you’ve gathered a solid list of references, investigate! Visit business websites and see that the contractor offers their services in a professional manner. Go to Google, Facebook, Angie’s List and other various websites to read reviews! Find out what customers liked and disliked about the work that was provided to them.

4. Gather Your Bids

Submit your plans to each contractor and wait to receive all bids back. Don’t choose a contractor solely on price…the highest price may not mean the best work! Be sure to request an itemized bid so you’re not in the dark about any aspect of the job. This also allows you to break down and compare the different contractors you’re considering. Ask more questions…Is this bid an estimate or a fixed price? If they give you a hard time about asking for an itemized bid, you might want to reconsider working with them.

5. Protect Yourself

Once you’ve chosen the perfect contractor and agreed on a price, write up a contract. Be as specific as possible, including a timeline schedule, materials needed, and even a warranty agreement. Be sure that both you AND the contractor sign and keep copies of the contract.

3. Set Up a Pay Schedule

Don’t pay the entire bill up front. Work closely with your contractor to set up a payment schedule after certain deliverables have been met and stay very involved with the entire work process. Pop in from time to time to make sure things are being done to your liking.
